Andrew Sharman
Consultant in Critical Care Medicine, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
After completing a BSc(Hons) at Kings College London in Physiology and Pharmacology, Andrew studied medicine at The Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London. After house jobs and a spell in accident and emergency medicine in Leeds, he completed a medical rotation in Leicester and discovered his love of all things acute.
Anaesthesia followed in Nottingham, as this was the best way to train in Intensive Care Medicine. He was one of the first trainees to complete a dual training programme (later to be called ’joint’) and complete his diploma of intensive care medicine (DICM). Preparation for the dissertation of this exam developed his interest in renal medicine and, in particular, renal replacement therapy and anticoagulation.
Recently he has become a director of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) group and this supports his other interest of trauma. He is a college tutor and educational supervisor.
Andrew’s initial background as a physician still pulls and it does not take much to stir his interest in medical patients and their problems.
